Downstream Demand Boosts Confidence, Iron Ore Prices Surge Significantly [SMM Commentary]

Published: Feb 20, 2025 17:17
This morning, Dalian iron ore futures fluctuated rangebound, but surged significantly in the afternoon. The most-traded I2505 contract finally closed at 837 yuan/mt, up 2.26% for the day. Traders actively sold off goods, while some steel mills locked in profits with moderate purchase willingness. Mainstream transaction prices rose by 10-15 yuan/mt compared to yesterday. Looking ahead to next week, iron ore shipments are expected to rebound, but pig iron production is expected to drop back slightly, with overall iron ore demand remaining stable with a weak trend. Considering the strong market expectations ahead of the Two Sessions, ore prices may continue to fluctuate upward. However, given the currently high valuation, an upward breakthrough is challenging, and the market is expected to operate with sideways movement.

Today, Dalian iron ore futures fluctuated rangebound in the morning and surged significantly in the afternoon. The most-traded I2505 contract finally closed at 837 yuan/mt, up 2.26% for the day. Traders actively sold off their inventories, while some steel mills locked in profits with moderate purchase willingness. In Shandong, the mainstream transaction prices of PB fines were 825-830 yuan/mt, up 10-15 yuan/mt from yesterday; in Tangshan, the transaction prices of PB fines were around 840-845 yuan/mt, also up 10-15 yuan/mt from yesterday. According to today's SMM data, the apparent demand for rebar increased significantly this week, confirming the improvement in downstream demand, boosting market confidence, and driving a sharp rise in ferrous metals series prices. Looking ahead to next week, iron ore shipments are expected to rebound, but pig iron production is likely to drop back slightly, with overall iron ore demand remaining stable with a weak trend. Considering the strong market expectations ahead of the Two Sessions, ore prices may continue to fluctuate upward. However, given the currently high valuation, an upward breakthrough will be challenging, and prices are expected to operate with sideways movement.

Before the holiday, the black chain is unlikely to see a trend-driven market [SMM Steel Industry Chain Weekly Report].
This week, ferrous metals were in the doldrums, with coking coal and coke staging a mid-week rise. At the beginning of the week, financial markets experienced sharp fluctuations, dragging down sentiment in the ferrous chain and leading to a pullback in futures. Mid-week, Indonesia's cut to coke production quotas drove coking coal and coke futures to lead the gains, though the impact was more pronounced on thermal coal, while coking coal's rise was largely sentiment-driven and short-lived. In the latter part of the week, finished products continued their seasonal inventory buildup, and support from the raw material side weakened, causing the entire ferrous chain to pull back. In the spot market, with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, purchasing activity slowed down further, with end-users only making limited, as-needed purchases at low prices.
